The specification beside this text gives a theoretical mass of 4731.04 Da for the free acid. A supplier quoting a number some dozens of daltons away is not necessarily wrong, but is describing a different form and owes you the word for it. A listing that gives a name and no mass has identified nothing. A listing that gives a mass without saying whether it is the free acid, the acetate or the sodium salt has identified it approximately, and approximately is not what an identity check is for.

    Why the mass figure catches what purity cannot

    Purity tells you how much of one thing is in the vial. Mass tells you which thing it is. A sample can be 99% one compound and still be 99% the wrong compound, and only the mass spectrometry result catches that. On a certificate worth reading, the measured mass sits beside the mass calculated from the sequence, and the two agree to within the resolution of the instrument. That is the identity check, and it is the figure to read first - ahead of the headline percentage, which is the figure designed to be read first.

    The impurity peaks matter as much as the headline. A batch reported at a given purity with one large impurity is not the same material as a batch reported at the same purity with four small ones, and a report listing only the main peak has not shown you which you have. For a peptide of this length the plausible impurities are deletion sequences - chains missing a residue - and they are close enough in mass to the target that a report with no chromatogram is not telling you very much.
